使い方

• nowhere は否定の意味を含む

  nowhere 自体に「どこにも〜ない」という否定の意味があります。そのため、標準的な英語では not と一緒に使って二重否定にしないのが普通です。

• not anywhere との違い

  nowhere は not anywhere とほぼ同じ意味ですが、nowhere のほうが少し強く、文全体を引き締める感じがあります。例: I couldn't find it anywhere. = It was nowhere to be found.

• よく使う決まり表現

  in the middle of nowhere は「人里離れた場所で」、out of nowhere は「突然、どこからともなく」、get nowhere は「進展しない」という意味です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I didn't go nowhere yesterday.

  正: I didn't go anywhere yesterday.

  標準英語では didn't と nowhere を一緒に使うと二重否定になります。否定文では anywhere を使うか、肯定形で I went nowhere とします。
