  名詞

  車が高速で長距離を走るための大きな道路。信号や歩行者用の横断がなく、出入り口が限られていることが多いです。主にイギリス英語で使われます。

  1本の高速道路を指すときは a motorway、複数なら motorways と言います。例: a new motorway「新しい高速道路」。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We went to London by motorway.

  正: We went to London on the motorway.

  交通手段としての「〜で」は by car などと言いますが、道路の上を走る意味では on the motorway が自然です。

• 誤: The motorway has many traffic lights.

  正: The motorway has very few junctions and no traffic lights.

  motorway は普通、信号のない高速道路を指します。信号が多い一般道にはあまり使いません。
