  名詞

  島や離れた地域に対して、国や地域の中心となる大きな陸地を指します。ふつう the mainland の形で使います。

• ふつう the mainland と言う

  特定の島や離島と比べて『本土』と言うときは、the mainland が自然です。例: go to the mainland（本土へ行く）。

• mainland は相対的な言葉

  どこを『本土』と見るかは話し手の立場や文脈で変わります。島に住む人が使うことが多い語です。

• Mainland China のように固有表現でも使う

  Mainland China は、香港・マカオ・台湾などと区別して『中国本土』を指す表現です。この場合は M と C を大文字にすることがあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We went to mainland by ferry.

  正: We went to the mainland by ferry.

  『本土』という名詞として使うときは、ふつう the mainland とします。

• 誤: The mainland of Japan has four main islands.

  正: Japan has four main islands.

  日本のように主要部分自体が複数の島から成る場合、文脈なしに mainland of Japan と言うと不自然になることがあります。日本語の『本土』をそのまま直訳しないよう注意します。
