  数や量がある基準より少ないことを表します。

  副詞

  less than perfect のように、期待する程度に達していないことを表す使い方もあります。

使い方

• 数の前でよく使う

  less than five、less than an hour、less than 100 yen のように、数や量の前で使います。

• fewer than との違い

  厳密には数えられる名詞には fewer than が好まれることがあります。ただし日常会話では less than ten people のような言い方も広く使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Less ten people came.

  正: Less than ten people came.

  『〜より少ない』には than が必要です。

• 誤: This bag is less than expensive.

  正: This bag is not very expensive.

  less than + 形容詞の用法は使える表現が限られます。普通の会話では not very expensive のほうが自然です。
