使い方

• informal な表現

  guesstimate はくだけた語なので、会話や社内の軽い話し合いでよく使います。正式な報告書や論文では estimate、rough estimate、approximation などの方が無難です。

• guess との違い

  guess は単なる「当てずっぽう」に近い場合があります。guesstimate は、完全には正確でないが、何らかの情報や経験を使って出した「概算」というニュアンスです。

• 名詞と動詞で発音が変わることがある

  名詞では語末が弱く /-mət/、動詞では estimate と同じように /-meɪt/ と発音されることがあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please submit the official guesstimate to the client.

  正: Please submit the official estimate to the client.

  guesstimate はくだけた表現で、official「正式な」とは相性がよくありません。顧客向けの正式文書では estimate が自然です。

• 誤: I made a guesstimate exactly.

  正: I made a rough guesstimate.

  guesstimate 自体が「ざっくりした見積もり」なので、exactly「正確に」と組み合わせると意味が矛盾します。
