使い方

• attend a funeral が自然

  「葬式に出る」は英語で attend a funeral がよく使われます。go to a funeral も自然ですが、attend のほうが少し丁寧です。

• funeral と memorial service の違い

  funeral は亡くなった人を見送り、埋葬や火葬と関係することが多い儀式です。memorial service は遺体がない場合もあり、故人を追悼する会という意味が強いです。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I attended to a funeral.

  正: I attended a funeral.

  attend は「出席する」という意味では他動詞なので、通常 attend to a funeral とは言いません。to は不要です。

• 誤: The funeral of my grandfather was in last week.

  正: My grandfather's funeral was last week.

  時を表す last week の前には in を置きません。また、所有格を使うと自然な英語になります。
