使い方

• ふつうは the equator と言う

  地球の赤道は1つだけなので、英語では多くの場合 the equator と定冠詞 the を付けます。例: near the equator, cross the equator.

• 大文字にしないことが多い

  文の始めでない限り、一般的には equator と小文字で書きます。ただし、地図や見出しなどでは Equator と大文字になることもあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Singapore is near equator.

  正: Singapore is near the equator.

  地球の赤道を指すときは、ふつう the equator と言います。

• 誤: We live in the equator.

  正: We live near the equator.

  赤道は線なので、『赤道の中に住む』という意味の in は不自然です。近くに住むなら near the equator が自然です。
