使い方

• 称号として使うときは大文字になることがある

  特定の人物の称号として名前や地名と一緒に使う場合は the Duke of Wellington のように Duke を大文字で書くことが多い。一般的に『公爵』という意味なら a duke のように小文字で書く。

• 女性形は duchess

  男性の公爵は duke、女性の公爵または公爵夫人は duchess と言う。日本語では文脈により『女公爵』『公爵夫人』と訳し分ける。

• duke it out は別表現

  duke it out は『けんかする』『決着をつけるために争う』というくだけた表現。貴族の duke とは意味が離れているので注意。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He is the duke of the company.

  正: He is the president of the company.

  duke は会社の役職ではなく、主に貴族の称号を表す。会社なら president, CEO, manager などを使う。

• 誤: She is a duke.

  正: She is a duchess.

  女性にはふつう duchess を使う。歴史や制度によって例外はあるが、学習者はまず duke＝男性、duchess＝女性と覚えるとよい。
