使い方

• both は「2つ」に使う

  both は必ず2人・2つについて使います。3つ以上なら all を使います。例: both hands「両手」、all three books「3冊全部」。

• both of の使い方

  both of の後には、them/us/you などの代名詞、または the/my/these などが付いた名詞が来ます。例: both of them, both of my friends。

• both A and B は強調表現

  AとBの両方をはっきり示したいときに使います。AとBは同じ種類の語句にすると自然です。例: both cheap and useful「安くて役に立つ」。

• 主語が both のときはふつう複数扱い

  Both are correct. や Both of them are busy. のように、動詞は基本的に複数形を使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Both of them is busy.

  正: Both of them are busy.

  both は2人・2つを指すので、主語として使うときはふつう複数扱いになり、are を使います。

• 誤: Both them came to the meeting.

  正: Both of them came to the meeting.

  them のような目的格代名詞の前では both of them の形にします。

• 誤: I like both tea or coffee.

  正: I like both tea and coffee.

  both A and B の形で使います。both と or は通常セットにしません。
