  動詞

  物や権利などが、ある人・場所・組織の所有物であることを表します。ふつう belong to の形で使います。

  This bag belongs to my sister.

  このバッグは私の姉のものです。

• 〜の一員である、〜に所属している

  動詞

  人がクラブ、チーム、会社、団体などのメンバーであることを表します。これも belong to をよく使います。

  She belongs to the school tennis club.

• ふさわしい場所にある、あるべき場所にある

  動詞

  物や人が、その場所に自然に合っている、またはそこに置かれるべきだという意味です。belong in, belong on, belong with などの形で使います。

使い方

• belong to の形が基本

  「〜のものである」「〜に所属している」は、ほとんどの場合 belong to + 名詞 の形で使います。例: This phone belongs to Ken. / She belongs to a choir.

• 所有の意味では受け身にしない

  belong は自動詞なので、This is belonged to me. とは言いません。正しくは This belongs to me. です。

• 進行形はふつう使わない

  belong は状態を表す動詞なので、I am belonging to this group. より I belong to this group. が自然です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: This book is belong to me.

  正: This book belongs to me.

  belong は be 動詞と一緒にこの形では使いません。主語が三人称単数なので belongs にします。

• 誤: I belong a car.

  正: I own a car.

  belong は「所有している」という意味の他動詞ではありません。「車を所有している」は own や have を使います。

• 誤: I am belonging to the team.

  正: I belong to the team.

  belong は状態を表す動詞なので、通常は進行形にしません。

• 誤: This cup belongs me.

  正: This cup belongs to me.

  「〜のものだ」は belong to + 人 の形にします。to が必要です。
