  燃えたあとに残る粉全体を言うときは ash がよく使われます。人の遺灰や、火事・火葬のあとに残ったものを感情的・具体的に言うときは ashes がよく使われます。

• soot との違い

  ash は燃えたあとに残る灰色の粉です。soot は煙から出る黒いすすで、壁や煙突などに付く汚れを指します。

よくある間違い

• 誤: There are many ash on the table.

  正: There is a lot of ash on the table.

  灰という意味の ash はふつう不可算名詞なので、many ではなく a lot of などを使います。
