arithmetic

算数、算術 足し算、引き算、掛け算、割り算など、数を使った基本的な計算のこと。学校の科目としても使われます。
計算 数字を使って答えを出す作業を指します。日常の買い物や仕事の数字確認などにも使えます。

使い方

  • mathematics より範囲が狭い

    arithmetic は主に足し算・引き算・掛け算・割り算などの基本的な計算を指します。mathematics は代数、幾何、統計なども含む広い言葉です。

  • 数えられない名詞として使うことが多い

    科目や分野としての arithmetic は普通、冠詞 a/an を付けず、複数形にもしません。たとえば study arithmetic と言います。

  • 形容詞として名詞の前に置く

    形容詞の arithmetic は arithmetic problem や arithmetic operation のように名詞の前に置きます。日常会話では arithmetical より arithmetic の方がよく使われます。
