使い方

• whileとの違い

  whereas と while はどちらも「一方で」という意味で使えますが、whereas は対比をよりはっきり示します。while には「〜している間に」という時間の意味もありますが、whereas には通常その意味はありません。

• 文の位置

  whereas は文の途中にも文頭にも置けます。文頭に置く場合は、whereas の節のあとにコンマを置くのが普通です。例: Whereas Tom likes cats, Anna prefers dogs.

• whereとは別の語

  whereas は場所を表す where とは違い、主に対比を表す接続詞です。「どこで」という意味では使いません。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Whereas Japan, Canada is larger.

  正: Compared with Japan, Canada is larger.

  whereas の後には普通、主語と動詞を含む節が必要です。名詞だけを比べる場合は compared with などを使います。

• 誤: I like coffee, whereas, my brother likes tea.

  正: I like coffee, whereas my brother likes tea.

  whereas の直後にコンマを置くのは不自然です。文の途中では、whereas の前にコンマを置くことが多いです。

• 誤: I stayed home whereas it was raining.

  正: I stayed home because it was raining.

  日常英語で理由を表す「〜なので」には because を使います。whereas の理由用法は法律文書などの非常に堅い表現です。
