• 〜しない限り、もし〜でなければ

  接続詞

  ある条件が起こらない場合に、主文の内容が起こることを表します。多くの場合「if ... not」と言い換えられます。

  We will be late unless we leave now.

  今出発しない限り、私たちは遅れるでしょう。

• 〜の場合を除いて、ただし〜なら別

  接続詞

  普通はそうなるが、特定の例外がある場合だけ違う、という意味で使います。

  The shop is open every day unless there is a holiday.

使い方

• unless は if ... not に近い

  unless は多くの場合「if ... not」と同じ意味です。We won't start unless everyone is here. は If everyone is not here, we won't start. に近く、「全員がそろわなければ始めません」という意味です。

• 未来の話でも unless 節では現在形を使う

  時間や条件を表す節では、未来の意味でも will を使わず現在形を使うのが普通です。We will cancel the picnic unless it rains ではなく、文脈上「雨が降らなければ」なら We will have the picnic unless it rains. のように現在形 rains を使います。

• 否定語を重ねすぎない

  unless 自体に「〜でなければ」という否定の意味があるため、unless 節に not を入れると意味が逆になったり分かりにくくなったりします。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We will go hiking unless it will rain.

  正: We will go hiking unless it rains.

  未来の予定について話していても、unless 節では普通 will ではなく現在形を使います。

• 誤: Unless you don't hurry, you will miss the train.

  正: Unless you hurry, you will miss the train.

  「急がなければ電車に乗り遅れる」と言いたい場合、unless だけで「〜しなければ」の意味になるので、don't は不要です。

• 誤: Unless you study, you will pass the test.

  正: If you study, you will pass the test.

  「勉強すれば合格する」と言いたいときは unless ではなく if を使います。unless は「勉強しない限り」の意味です。
