  茶葉やティーバッグにお湯を注いでお茶を作り、そのまま注ぐための容器。ふつう、注ぎ口・取っ手・ふたがある。

使い方

• teapot と kettle の違い

  teapot はお茶を入れて注ぐ容器です。kettle は水を沸かすためのやかん・電気ケトルです。英語では、ふつう水を teapot で沸かすとは言いません。

• 日本語の「急須」との関係

  日本茶の急須も英語では teapot と言えます。必要なら Japanese teapot と言うと、日本式の急須だと伝わりやすくなります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I boiled water in the teapot.

  正: I boiled water in the kettle and poured it into the teapot.

  teapot はお茶を入れる容器で、水を沸かす道具はふつう kettle と言います。

• 誤: Please put the teapot on the stove to boil water.

  正: Please put the kettle on the stove to boil water.

  コンロにかけて水を沸かす場合は kettle を使うのが自然です。
