使い方

• we / us とセットで使う

  ourselves は「私たち自身」という意味で、主語が we のときによく使います。例: We introduced ourselves.「私たちは自己紹介した」。目的語として単に「私たちを」と言うなら us を使います。例: The teacher helped us.

• by ourselves は「自分たちだけで」

  by ourselves は「助けなしに」または「他の人なしで」という意味です。文脈によって「自力で」「私たちだけで」と訳します。

• 強調にも使える

  We did it ourselves. は「私たち自身がやった」という強調です。誰かにやってもらったのではない、という気持ちを表せます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We introduced us to the new teacher.

  正: We introduced ourselves to the new teacher.

  主語の we と目的語が同じ人たちを指すときは us ではなく ourselves を使います。

• 誤: We did it by us.

  正: We did it by ourselves.

  「自分たちだけで」は by ourselves と言います。by us は「私たちによって」という受け身に近い意味になり、ここでは不自然です。

• 誤: We made dinner ourself.

  正: We made dinner ourselves.

  we は複数なので、再帰代名詞も複数形の ourselves を使います。ourself は普通の会話や文章では一般的ではありません。
