使い方

• 過去の時期を広く指す

  in the past は具体的な日付ではなく、今より前の時期を広く指します。

• 期間が続くと現在完了と合いやすい

  in the past few years のように現在まで続く期間を言うときは、has changed のような現在完了とよく使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: In past, people used candles.

  正: In the past, people used candles.

  決まった表現なので the を入れます。

• 誤: I went there in the past yesterday.

  正: I went there yesterday.

  yesterday のような具体的な過去時点がある場合、in the past は不要です。

• 誤: The city changed in past five years.

  正: The city has changed in the past five years.

  『過去5年間で』は in the past five years と言い、現在までの変化には現在完了が自然です。
