使い方

• 性別を問わない言葉

  grandchild は「孫」という意味で、男の子にも女の子にも使えます。男の子と分かっている場合は grandson、女の子の場合は granddaughter と言えます。

• 複数形は grandchildren

  grandchild の複数形は grandchilds ではなく grandchildren です。child の複数形 children と同じ変化をします。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I have three grandchild.

  正: I have three grandchildren.

  3人以上なので複数形 grandchildren を使います。grandchilds とは言いません。

• 誤: My grandchild is my parent's child.

  正: My grandchild is my child's child.

  grandchild は「自分の子どもの子ども」です。親の子どもは自分の兄弟姉妹を指すことがあります。
