使い方

• 「誇張」と「過言ではない」の両方で使う

  exaggeration は基本的に「大げさに言うこと」ですが、It is no exaggeration to say that ... は「…と言っても過言ではない」という定番表現です。

• 数えられる場合と数えられない場合がある

  一般的な「誇張」という行為を言うときは uncountable として exaggeration を使い、具体的な一つの大げさな発言を指すときは an exaggeration と言えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: It is exaggeration to say that he is a genius.

  正: It is no exaggeration to say that he is a genius.

  「…と言っても過言ではない」は no exaggeration を使うのが自然です。

• 誤: His story was very exaggeration.

  正: His story was a big exaggeration.

  exaggeration は名詞なので very を直接つけるより、a big exaggeration や full of exaggeration のように言います。形容詞なら exaggerated を使います。

• 誤: She did an exaggeration about the problem.

  正: She exaggerated the problem.

  「問題を大げさに言った」は動詞 exaggerate を使うほうが自然です。
