使い方

• eastwards と eastward

  eastwards は主にイギリス英語でよく使われる副詞です。アメリカ英語では eastward がより一般的です。意味はほぼ同じで、「東へ」「東の方へ」です。

• to eastwards とは言わない

  eastwards 自体に「〜の方へ」という意味があるため、普通は to を前に置きません。ただし「東側へ」と場所を名詞的に言う場合は to the east と言えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We walked to eastwards.

  正: We walked eastwards.

  eastwards は副詞で「東へ」という意味を含むため、前に to は不要です。

• 誤: The town is eastwards of here.

  正: The town is east of here.

  位置関係を表す「ここより東にある」は east of here と言います。eastwards は主に動きの方向に使います。
