consultation は、友達同士の軽い相談よりも、医師・弁護士・専門家などに正式に相談する場面でよく使います。日常の軽い相談なら talk や ask for advice のほうが自然なことがあります。

人と相談する場合は a consultation with a doctor のように with を使います。話題を示す場合は consultation on the plan や consultation about the project が使えます。

不可算・可算の両方で使える
1回の面談は a consultation、制度や過程としての協議は consultation として使われることがあります。例: public consultation は『住民意見聴取』という過程を指します。
