「記事」の article
newspaper article、magazine article、online article のように、あるテーマについて書かれた文章に使います。個人的な作文や学校の小論文は essay と言うことが多いです。

文法の article
英文法では a、an、the を article と呼びます。a/an は indefinite article「不定冠詞」、the は definite article「定冠詞」です。

「品物」の意味はやや硬い
article は「品物」という意味もありますが、日常会話では item のほうが自然です。article of clothing は「衣類1点」という少し形式的な表現です。

Latin
articulus : 小さな関節、区切り、部分
Latin の articulus が古フランス語を通じて英語に入りました。「小さな部分、区切られたもの」という考えから、文章の一部分である「記事」や、法律の「条項」、文法上の小さな語である「冠詞」という意味につながっています。
