使い方

後ろは複数名詞

a number of の後には students, questions, cafes のような複数名詞を置く。数えられない名詞には使わない。
the number of との違い

a number of は「いくつもの」。the number of は「〜の数」。意味も文法も違う。

よくある間違い

誤: A number of student joined the club.

正: A number of students joined the club.

a number of の後は複数名詞にする。student ではなく students。
誤: A number of information was useful.

正: A lot of information was useful.

information は数えられない名詞なので、a number of ではなく a lot of などを使う。
