使い方

retell は「もう一度話す」
tell が「話す・伝える」なのに対し、retell は「すでにある話や聞いた内容をもう一度話す」という意味です。story, tale, events, what happened などとよく一緒に使います。

in one's own words とよく使う
授業や試験では retell the story in your own words（その話を自分の言葉で語り直す）の形がよく使われます。丸暗記ではなく、内容を理解して説明するニュアンスです。
よくある間違い

誤: He retolded the story.
正: He retold the story.
retell の過去形・過去分詞は retold です。retolded とは言いません。

正: She retold the story of her trip.
retell はふつう目的語を直接取ります。about を使うより、retell the story/details/events のように言うのが自然です。
