• math と mathematical の違い

  math は名詞で「数学」、mathematical は形容詞で「数学の」「数学的な」という意味です。たとえば「数学の問題」は a math problem または a mathematical problem と言えますが、日常会話では a math problem のほうがよく使われます。

• 人に使うと少し硬い表現

  He is mathematical. だけだとやや不自然に聞こえることがあります。人が数学を得意だと言いたいときは、He is good at math. や She has a mathematical mind. が自然です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He is very mathematical.

  正: He is very good at math.

  「彼は数学が得意です」と言いたい場合、日常英語では good at math が自然です。mathematical は a mathematical mind のように名詞を修飾すると自然です。

• 誤: I studied mathematical yesterday.

  正: I studied mathematics yesterday.

  mathematical は形容詞なので、単独で「数学」という名詞の意味にはなりません。「数学」は mathematics または日常的に math と言います。
