使い方

  • chief executive officer の略

    CEO は chief executive officer の略で、文字を一つずつ C-E-O と読みます。普通はすべて大文字で書きます。

  • 会社名と使う形

    「〜社のCEO」は the CEO of ABC Company または ABC Company's CEO と言えます。役職名として名前の前に置く場合は CEO Tanaka のように冠詞なしで使われることもあります。

  • president との違い

    CEO は経営全体の最終責任者を指すことが多く、president は会社によって社長・代表・部門トップなど意味が変わります。日本語の「社長」は文脈によって CEO, president, company president などになります。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: He is CEO of the company, so he is always free.

    正: He is the CEO of the company, so he is very busy.

    特定の会社のCEOを説明するときは the CEO of the company が自然です。また、CEOは責任の重い役職なので always free は意味が不自然です。

  • 誤: The CEO decided the company will close yesterday.

    正: The CEO decided yesterday that the company would close.

    decided yesterday のように、決定した時点を表す語は decided の近くに置くと自然です。過去の発言内容なので would を使うことがあります。
